Chapter Ten
I left the hotel at around one o’clock. I had decided to stay a little while longer with Tiffany. She had been hit pretty hard by Cecilia’s death, in spite of not being her biggest fan. I had told her that I would take the chief up on his promise and head over to Cecilia’s house to see what I could find out.
I wasn’t looking forward to this particular outing; for one thing, my body was still aching from my surprise visit the night before. But underneath that, I was pretty unsettled by the sudden loss of one of the big players in this wannabe Greek tragedy. Cecilia’s death had upset the balance, and it felt as though my house of cards was on the brink of collapse. Mixed metaphors aside, my brain felt messy, and this trip into town needed to fix it once and for all.
I arrived in front of the house to see police tape across the door and police standing guard outside. I walked up to one of the officers and told him that I had authorization from the commissioner and the chief to visit the crime scene. He asked for my name and checked it on a list he had, then let me through. I ducked under the tape and walked up the grand steps that led to the front door. It was open, and another police officer was standing in the doorway. He gave me a small nod and gestured for me to keep going inside. I took a couple of steps into the hall and stopped.
The stairs rose to the second floor on the right-hand side of the entrance hallway. At the top of the stairs, there was a large landing with a railing which allowed you, if you were looking over the edge, to see down into the lobby from the second floor. A silk scarf had been wound tightly around this railing, and the other end was wound tightly around Cecilia Redmann’s neck.
“Awful, isn’t it?” a voice asked from behind me.
I turned to look at who it belonged to.
A man in dark jeans and a shirt stood in the doorway. He met my eye and pulled out a badge and waved it in my direction, then pocketed it and turned back to stare up at Cecilia’s lifeless body. He shook his head.
“It sure is.” I turned to face him and held out my hand. “Ana Delgado.”
“Francisco Bedin. I’m a detective with the carabinieri. I don’t think I’ve seen you before.”
“Probably not,” I admitted. “I’m staying at Hotel Valle. You know Tiffany Gennarro? Working security for her while she gets back on her feet after… well, everything that happened there.”
“Ah, Ms. Gennarro. Yes, I’d say she’s fairly connected to all of this ‘everything’, then. So I guess that puts you right in the middle of it, too.”
“You could say that.” I nodded, and he gave me a smile that broke into a look of concern.
“May I ask, what happened to your face? You have some nasty bruising.
